For me personally when I think about social justice I think all the things that I have been taught throughout all the four years in Social Justice High School. The definition of Social Justice is “justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.” For me this definition is somewhat agreeable with me but, for me social justice means fighting and struggling to achieve the same privileges and opportunities that other people have in today’s society. For example, in my freshmen year there was movement that involved the students, the movement involved sitting out of class due to the taking away AP classes and the lay off teachers. In which the struggle to keep the classes and to have the teachers back is an example of achieving privileges through struggle. The obstacles that we have connected to this issue is inequality. Inequality from economically, cultural, and political viewpoints. In which it holds back populations to develop into modern day society.
We here have good quality water than other people in different regions of the world such as in Africa there is no good water quality. There are countries in Africa who don’t have good quality water or don’t even have access to water. Even if we have more privileges there are still others that have more privileges/power than us. This is a social justice issue because other people are unfortunate to have good quality water or access to water due to the source of water is contaminated. Water should not be an option it is a need for human life in order to survive.
There are many strategies to achieve a privilege from protesting, boycotting, etc. As I stated the sit-out that the students of Social Justice High School to fight for their education and education for future students like myself and all of you. From being part of the sit-out it made me realize that the school is united to fight and struggle for a privilege/ opportunity. Another version of struggle was the hunger strikers that put their life on the line in other to have students from the community have a school and for future students to have an education as well. If it weren’t for the hunger strikers this school would have never been constructed.
