Crestwood, IL ContaminationIn Crestwood, IL during the late 1980's the village of Crestwood switched their water supply to apparently save money but they were supplying residents with water that was contaminated for over two decades. The village officials told state officials there were no concern with the water that they were distributing to the residents. The water was contaminated with cancer causing chemicals which locals contracted by consuming the water. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) collected data from 1994 to 2006 and a total of 952 cancer cases were identified from the area of Crestwood. |
The collection of data of cancer was taken by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) did not release the report when it was completed “state health director, had said the study would be released to the public in July. Now agency officials say the data results will not be officially available until sometime next year, leaving residents guessing if their decades-long exposure to carcinogen-laced tap water contributed to health problems.” Therefore distributing contaminated water the (IDPH) collected data from 1994 to 2006 “ A total of 952 cancer cases were identified”. By the time it the data was collected there was a severe exposure to the chemicals and affected the residents of Crestwood.

Chicago Residents at Risk of Lead Contamination
The water pipeline or water mains that are used “ Nearly 80 percent of the properties in Chicago are hooked up to service lines made of lead. ” With the service lines being made from lead it poses a health concern to the residents because as in Flint, Michigan it will affect the development of an individual, such as, having a lower IQ.
Recently in the past week there has been a confirmation that there is lead contamination. “Significantly higher lead levels have been found in scores of homes statewide. One in every 10 water systems found lead levels exceeding 40 parts per billion in at least one home between 2011 and 2015” It indicates that the contamination of lead is presented in the whole state and the residents are at risk with health concerns there are suggestions to remove the current service lines with new ones but the cost will be too much and it will take a long period of time to replace it. |
