Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich is a women who started as a file clerk at a law firm helped and investigated the company PG&E and helped expose the contamination of Hinkley. The issue of water contamination have existed and still exist today in the United States. One of the known cases of water contamination in the U.S is the contamination of Hinkley, California during the 20th century .
A company named Pacific Gas & Electric contaminated the water of Hinkley for over 30 years and had affected the residents in Hinkley. PG&E had been exposed for leaking toxic Chromium 6 into the ground water. Chromium 6 caused health illnesses such as, lung cancer that the people of Hinkley had contracted when they used the water that was supplied to their homes. In 1996 Ms. Brockovich and Mr. Masry, forced PG&E to pay out the largest injury settlement in US history which was $333 million in damages to more than 600 residents of Hinkley, CA. The state decided to switch their water supply in order to save money due to the financial state of emergency . The state switched their water supply to Flint river that flows through the town. The residents know the river for being filthy. After the switch everything of the water changed, the water looked, tasted and smelled different. The water was contaminated and was discovered that it contained lead.
After the switch the residents were being affected. The parents in particular are worried about their children. Lead is known to damage the developmental part of the brain that lowers IQ test and changes behavior. |
Shell Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico The oil company Shell has had an incident, a pipeline underwater has broken and leaking out crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. “The leak—roughly 88,200 gallons—created a visible 2 mile by 13 mile oil slick in the sea about 97 miles south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana." The spill has almost reached 90,000 gallons of crude, by now it might already reached the 90,000 maybe even more as days pass. It will have similar effects as before which was affecting the population of aquatic life. After the incident happened there has been a cleanup crew dealing with the leaking oil in the Gulf. As of this moment there is no other information about the oil spill.
